The theme of the exhibition cargo revolves around the shipping container as transport, storage, housing and exhibition space, and the promises and myths of global shipping routes. On view are works, which are devoted to various aspects of the topic: ISO-containers and the global shipping routes are the subject of moving image works, photographs, drawings, painting and installations by Kader Attia, Frank Breuer, Tatjana Doll, Simon Faithfull, Jan Köhler, Isa Melsheimer, Hans Op de Beeck, Paul Poet, Santiago Sierra, and Milica Tomic. In addition, we present two exhibitions designed for a container as an example of the growing number of shipping containers used as temporary architectures e.g. at fairs and by museums. Both shows have been developed by Anna-Catharina Gebbers for a container during this year‘s Munich Opera Festival at the Bavarian State Opera: For cargo manifest the conductor Kent Nagano was asked to form a virtual orchestra from images of musical instruments, which were contributed by 58 artists. In the moving image works program cargo vision ten artists show moving image works referring to opera.

We are very pleased to announce a lecture and visual essay by the cultural theorist and container expert Alexander Klose that will illustrate the cultural significance and symbolism of the shipping container on October 10th.
